i am hoping for sun, that this drizzle will burn off our windows and evaporate, make clouds for airplanes to slice through and blow off in another direction. just for today, my day in the city. my beloved role as Girl Thursday at Slingshot.
such a hope finds me there. all day i get to sit in that huge room with beautiful work on the tall walls! and all the flowers! i have not met a grouchy person yet. it is impossible, i think, to be interested enough in art to walk in to a gallery of your own free will and then be a total sour puss. it even works on me. my anxieties melt as i cross the bridge in to San Francisco, as that beautiful skyline comes in to view, as i navigate the one-way streets, as i unbolt the door. such a hope and such a deep, calm happiness. unexpected and absolutely cherished. i dig my heels in to the pleasure of this the very second i am through the door.
come see me. :)
these texts are an archive of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area from march 2007 - march 2015. it stands as a record of close to a decade of my life, charting the struggles i faced as an artist, daughter, and lover. messy and chaotic at times, eloquent and poetic at others, these texts are an index i am proud of. it was here in this electric box that i learned how to be honest about my experiences and the person i needed to become. it was here that i first learned the truism that words make the world and how to trust such a beautiful, rife, hard fact.

glowing and motivated
things are busy and wonderful and i'm just rolling along with it, feeling so satisfied and happy and encouraged. more than i've felt in a long time. i really can't stress enough how absolutely wonderful it feels to work with people who trust the ins and outs of my practice, who want me to do what feels right and just be myself. it's amazing and i am absolutely grateful for this experience. and we've been reviewed twice more! DANG! and DOUBLE DANG! ha! Artbusiness.com covered it the other day. scroll down til you find Slingshot. and Content at Fecal Face too! beautiful photographs! and tons of them! and i'm in one of them! see if you can spot me. i'm wearing a black shirt that says THE END in big white letters but the END is blocked by someones arm so it just says THE. :) but YAY!!!!! i'm blown away the opening got so much attention! it's so exciting! and we're already working working working on the december show which could prove to be our last exhibition in the space (we're only guaranteed our spot until january).
i'll be sitting the gallery again today. please do come down and say hi. 890 valencia @ 20th. i'll be there from noon - 5pm. maybe even a bit later today. people seemed to be really streaming in around 4:30 last week so i might keep the space open a bit later today if it ends up being the same.
in other news, i've finished the admissions paperwork for my local JC so that i can learn a new language in the new year. :) it's been on my TO-DO list for a very long time and, as i thought about new year's resolutions, i decided it was time to take a run at it. i can't enroll until the middle of next month but the first step has been taken and i am looking forward to wandering around on a college campus again. i love college. i always have. i highly recommend it. :) and also, if i take a second class (which i definitely will. probably something like screen printing or ceramics. fun classes!), it defers my student loan which is awesome. two birds, one stone. survival at its finest. :)

ahhhhhhh. the long weekend is behind us (and what a beautiful weekend it was), and a short week is ahead of us. and good thing- i am worrrrrn out! on friday, 2 very close friends of mine from back home showed up on my doorstep! SURPRISE!!!! ahahahahah! and it was the most wonderful birthday surprise ever. we stayed up late, drank a ton of chai tea, and laughed our heads off for two days. absolutely wonderful!
i miss living in the same town as they do - it's 500 miles between their front door and mine - and having them here in my home was such a big gift. they went around my small home and looked at all the art (it's jam packed in here these days), and ohhhed and ahhhhed at all the work, pointed out their favorites, and told me what the images conjured up for them. i love hearing that kind of stuff- how a piece activates someone else's memory and experience. and we talked a lot about moving in to the 30s: how everyone i know tells me that it is a wonderful decade of living. especially for women. a time when we really start coming in to our own and develop a deep sense of self-assurance, resolve, and fire. a time when life really starts taking off. and i've been sensing that that's the case for at least a year now- becoming more bold, more brave, more secure in my own ideas and desires and needs.
when they left on sunday, i got teary eyed for sure. i miss those days when i could just call them up and ask what they were doing after work, pop on by, and stay up late giggling. friends are a beautiful thing. and GOOD friends are gorgeous and stunning and priceless. i made sure they left with a piece of art to love. truly: it's the least i can do for these two. :)
and now here we are at tuesday. i'm planning an fairly easy week for myself. the BIG 3.5 mile RUN every day for the next 4 days, lots of reading, and lots of drawing in bed. that's it. and maybe doing a few dishes every now and then. i've been working on a secret series of drawings for the passed few weeks and i finally hit the half-way mark last week. i want to pick up a bit more steam and get the project finished up as quickly as possible because it is giving rise to a ton of great ideas.
lately, i've been feeling the need to work very fast, not get hung up by perfectionism at all. just do my best, take what i've learned, and keep moving. when i am snared in a whirlpool of ideas is when i feel the most alive. the happiest and warmest.

YAY!!!!!!
my house SPARKLES! i don't think it's ever been this clean and well organized! i even washed the walls! hahahaha! i pick my friend up today at 2 and i am so happy and excited to see her. we haven't seen each other in 2 years! and last night i stayed up late crocheting, too excited to sleep. one of my goals in life is to make myself a blanket. i've attempted it a whole bunch of times and have had no success. none. i finished an afghan once but when i finished it and held it up in front of me it wasn't even close to being square. it was totally triangulated and horrible. i still have it as a time-capsule type thing but i want to try it again. i've been working on it, here and there, for months and made some major headway last night while i was over-run with excitement... in spite of my aching back after a full day of frenzied scouring. :)
my friend is an artist too and we'll have an entire week of drawing and laughing and making funky little things. i can't wait to hear what she thinks of the new drawings and paintings and i can't wait to see what we'll create while she's here. on her last visit we worked on the same canvas together. made a swirling, fantastic painting that encompassed both our outlooks and styles. HAPPINESS!
my posts will probably be pretty sporadic this week but know that i am having a wonderful time and lots of laughter. i wish the same for you. :)

i am smiling
after my mini-crisis the other day about career stuff and what to do, where to go, and how to organize a body of work, i gathered up all the images on to my computer desktop and started weeding things out, pairing things up, pairing the pairs, and taking it slow. i woke up yesterday feeling fantastic and immediately went to work on a drawing. i worked on it until my hand locked up and then reached for it first thing again this morning, still feeling fantastic. and i poured all my anxiety out in black graphite. scratch scratch scratch and dig. i sat in bed, under my black quilt, with my drawing on my lap, and let go of all the recent worries. and here she is- beautiful and true. my heart is warm and i am calm and happy.

another new week
monday morning. again again again. coffee in the pot, coffee in my cup, and The Almighty Jog awaits. the slow traffic rumbles on the 2 lane highway and the sky is only just-now blue. it was white a few minutes ago, aching and sleepy. breath on a mirror. smiley faces on a window pane. 6 months of the New Year gone already. a flung arrow. my my my. and the burn of so many plans. days stacked upon days. aching and sleepy, yes. but happy too. and excited. and not at all worried about stupidity or perfection. not one bit.
good morning. :)

:)
could it have been the waves? or reading Art & Fear, there, at the edge of the world? a shore where the water is too cold for humans but just right for dogs. and i made a pile of river rocks, beautiful grey stones flat as pancakes. and another pile of soft-looking, impeccably white stones with the intention of bringing them home and putting them in glass jars on the window sill. but i left the piles there. smiled, as i walked away, that a child would probably be the person to notice the piles and think it an act of magic. :) i was that kind of little kid, for sure.
and so this sweep lately- bits of my childhood-self beginning to show up again in my daily life. innocent, trusting actions. simple and sweet and so endlessly enjoyable. the warm lure of the potential that exists inside a regular day. maybe this is the One Day at a Time philosophy in action. i've been trying to harness it for months and i finally feel like i've got my hand in the mane of that particular horse. it is soft and exciting and today i woke with such a pleasant sense of possibility.
this morning, i will run as if i am already a marathon winner. and i will write as if i've already published a novel. and i will paint as if i am already welcomed in to a museum. because it relieves the pressure to look at those things. to get back in to the single moment, be present in the action, and not look outside for encouragement. what could we accomplish if we did not worry about markers of success? such greatness! such happiness and capacity for joy. such long, hefty laughter.
looking back, i see that the last year of my life has been a kind of process of elimination. moving things out of the way so that i could move forward. so that i could see. clear out the clutter. the world begins to brighten again. i have painted and read and wrote more since january than i have since i was in school. my life gets fuller and fuller, built with (and on) only the things i truly care about. art, writing, laughing, running, reading, dancing, singing, dreaming, digging.
some days, i have to live in 15 minute increments in order to not become daunted by the task (or dream) in front of me. it works. i feel like i've finally cleared out enough clutter, swept out enough confusion, to really be able to identify the road i'm on. it's a good road. one that has brought such wonderful people in to my life (you and you and you and you and). and all the ideas you bring. all the toys we share. who would've thought that the seemingly geeky act of blogging would have dumped such a strong feeling of gratitude and connection in to my life! it is amazing and i learn so much from this community of people who, like me, deeply believe that art and words and ideas matter. that they are powerful and necessary.
it is an odd time in life. but also rife with wonder and possibility. it is a creative time. i'm happy to be here to share in it and offer whatever small kernel i can.

take a load off
my mind is full of ideas and images and bendy twisty itchy, in love with so many things. i spent most of yesterday in research mode and so i'm a bit worn out now but it's the good kind- the soreness that lets you know you worked hard and that it's okay to take a little break, which i'm really bad about, and so today i will. there is a huge value in remembering to do the "normal" things... taking the night off to watch a movie or go picking through antique stores or taking a walk. the sun is up and shining, it's not too cold, and i feel happy and hopeful. it's a good time to let go of abstract thoughts, give my brain a break, enjoy this beautiful day, and do a bit of grunt work maybe instead: priming canvas... washing the dishes... or maybe simply enjoying the light outside. happy friday, everybody! you earned it!

this makes me smile
drunk sonnet 14 by daniel bailey from blake butler on Vimeo.
dear mr. butler,
i especially like the part where you go "oookay oookay ooookay" and then you rub your face and let your finger dally behind your ear and this makes me what to zerbert you on the cheek.
:)
thank you for your time,
