saturday... which really doesn't mean a thing in terms of work. ;) art doesn't take breaks.
today i'm going out to the city to drop off the painting below and one of The Good Daughter portraits and a couple other things. fun! i always love gallery day!
and also... if you're in new york, HANG will have a booth at AAF. the shin-dig is may 6th - 9th. i won't be there but my paintings will be! yay! go see 'em if you can. artwork is always always always better in real life.
these texts are an archive of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area from march 2007 - march 2015. it stands as a record of close to a decade of my life, charting the struggles i faced as an artist, daughter, and lover. messy and chaotic at times, eloquent and poetic at others, these texts are an index i am proud of. it was here in this electric box that i learned how to be honest about my experiences and the person i needed to become. it was here that i first learned the truism that words make the world and how to trust such a beautiful, rife, hard fact.

waking up...
yesterday i dropped Lineage (4) off at the gallery. my ladies are gone and on their way to finding a new home. it is always a happy/sad moment. mostly happy, but i always feel a bit of a tug on my heart when i let go of a work that i feel i really put myself in to and that canvas is definitely in that crowd. but stopping in at the gallery and hanging out for a bit always puts me in a better mood and eases my mind and heart. i've been all twisted up lately over life's big questions - a very obnoxious, uneasy, un-fun occurrence - but going to the gallery yesterday and just having conversation about art and looking at the work of others really helped me calm down and refocus on the positive aspects of life.
i'm in the next show at the gallery which opens tomorrow and the reception is a couple days later on the 3rd- my birthday! i'm really looking forward to it. really, really, really! all the little apron portraits that i've made so far (save one) will be on display (one of them was used as the image on the show postcard! yay!), along with one of my favorite mono prints and the big canvas i just dropped off. shows are always exciting and a very happy moment and it's just what i need. there's really nothing i'd rather do on my birthday than this. it's the best present ever. :) whoever's in the area, please come by! bring a friend and have some wine and some laughs and celebrate art and birth and change and work and progress with me! click the gallery link for details.

fun!
getting ready for the First Thursday art shenanigans in the city tonight! yay! always a wonderful time and it's so good to get out of the house, away from my work, and look at the work of others. plus there's wine and cheese and all sorts of things that are bad for my waist-line but, thanks to The Jog, i no longer have to worry too much about stuff like that. not that i ever really did. :) life's too short to worry about vanity pounds.
anybody who's out and about tonight in san francisco, i'll be rounding out my evening at my gallery. swing on by and say hi! especially art-school friends. it's been too long since i've seen your happy, beautiful faces.

whooo...
i am beat! i mean BEAT! i slept and slept and slept and didn't manage to drag my silly self out of bed today until 9 o'clock. yikes! that's like... 4 hours behind schedule! oops. looks like The Jog will have to wait until this afternoon. by the time i'm done drinking coffee it'll be much too hot for the little girl to spend a solid hour running and hiking around in the blaze of the sun. i do not want to stroke out my little dog. so in the mean time, painting will be the order of the day. my usual. :)
yesterday, i spent the day in the city and it was absolutely wonderful. WONDERFUL! i met the lovely mina dresden (highlight of my day, week, month!) and the show she's got up right now, Jet Lag, is stunning. if you like work with a solid conceptual core, you'll love this show. the work is just beautiful!
after that, i dropped Lineage 2 off at the gallery and joked around with all my buddies over there. it's always such a great time at HANG. it really is. everybody who works there is super cool and not bourgie in the least and loves to talk as much as i do... well, almost as much as i do. i wake up talking, so... i'm a bit hard to beat when it comes to that sort of thing. :)
and then after that, i went over to the Studio Gallery to pick up some old work of mine and talk with jen and rab. they are such sweethearts. so positive and happy and light-hearted. it's always fun stopping in to talk with them for a bit and see all the new work on the walls.
i had an awesome day. awesome. and by 9 o'clock last night i was completely wiped out and heading to bed. i slept a solid 12 hours. dang! super dang! guess i needed the rest, huh! ha!
anyway, my maids need some attention. it's sunny and bright and a good day for working outside. i like working outside in the beautiful natural light and people stopping by to check out what i'm doing and my dog sniffing around and a glass of wine from the neighbor during break time.

YAY!!!
oh, i had such a wonderful time yesterday! i got to the gallery a few hours early to mingle, drink wine, take my time getting comfortable and set up, and hopefully fight over some art. i walked away with a jessica niello for myself and an eric jacobsen for my sweetie. yay! both of which are completely gorgeous and are excellent editions to our budding art collection. and most importantly, both artists are serious, are wonderful with their craft, and make images that pull on my heart-strings. i also got to do an amazing art swap with mr. piero spadaro yesterday (wow!) and am busy re-arranging the art on my walls to make it the center of attention. thank you piero! :)
i took pictures but for some odd reason, my computer isn't letting me upload them. boooooo! maybe i need to re-install the program... which means i've got to track down the disk. :( i'll get around to that later and will post some pictures as soon as i get my technical difficulties worked out.
and in other wonderful, unexpected, and completely awe-striking news: my gallery is taking "Lineage" with them next month to the art fair in New York! YAY! it shipped out yesterday and i couldn't be more thrilled about my maids meeting a new audience. astounding! and i am endlessly grateful. my gallery is, and always has been, so supportive of the work i do and this is such an unexpected display of that support that i am left feeling completely honored. thank you so so so much, guys! thank you!

i keep forgetting to mention...

tomorrow, there's a huge drawing event at my gallery. a whole bunch of us artists will be on-site with our paper and pencils and whatever else we feel like making marks with, and everything we come up with will be priced firmly at 50 bucks a shot. super cheap! i'm definitely planning on beefing up my art collection tomorrow in addition to making some creepy, pretty things of my own. if you're in the bay area, stop on it, bring a friend, help us drink the wine, and crack some jokes too. we'd love to see you! my drawing time is the last round from 3 - 5pm but i'll be hanging out the whole time. we start at 1pm. see you there!

work, work, work...
good morning everybody- it's friday! yay! and the thing that's greatest about fridays is that i know i'll be able to sleep in a bit tomorrow morning.
i made it to bed much later than i usually do last night due to the First Thursday openings in the city. i took my neighbor julie with me (she's never been) and it was the last First Thursday celebration that one of the two venues my gallery occupies is participating in. the doors will close at the 556 Sutter Street space at the end of the month. :( the economy has hit the art-world hard and so, rolling with the hit, we are consolidating in to one gallery space. it is sad, sad, sad but we are so much better off than a lot of other SF galleries. we are very, very lucky. better to beat it to the punch and close one set of doors than risk closing both.
but i still got up on time this morning and will spend my day painting. LOOKING at art always puts me in the mood to MAKE art. it's always been a top priority to do what i can to ensure that the work i give my gallery is the best i can do. it's become even more important to offer my best to the art-loving public in light of what has come to pass during the last year. and it doesn't hurt that i've been on quite the painting kick lately anyway.
so on that note and without further ado, here's your poem for today- work with eager discipline and pleasure today, guys: it's your last opportunity before the languid pull of the weekend.
Afternoon on a Hill
I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one!
I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow the grass,
And the grass rise.
And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

another little girl painting...
this piece is for the Hueliday show at HANG next month - a holiday show that celebrates color. and let me tell ya, it has been quite a challenge for me to allow color to come back in to the work! but i am endlessly thankful for the challenge. i think i've needed color in my life - at least a little bit - but for the past few months i have needed a more black and white approach to living for personal reasons. just something basic, bare bones, and unassuming, i suppose. but because of this show and having to commit to the color yellow, i've become a much more positive person and, though the work is still a bit morbid (i'm sure it always will be), i think a splash of color makes a huge difference and i'll be making the effort to include more color in future work. not as bright as this painting is, but i'll apply the lesson for sure.

always hopping on board at the last minute... but it seems to be working for me
yesterday was quite a day! absolutely wonderful, actually! i swung by SF Studio Gallery in San Francisco prior to going to the reception at HANG and managed to get two paintings in to the TINY exhibition they've got going on there. The show itself features an enormous amount of artwork - everything from paintings, to prints, to jewelry- all of which is under 7" x 7"... hence the name TINY.
Walking in to the gallery yesterday, it was such a treat to see the walls completely covered (salon style)in art. and Jennifer, the owner, is so sweet and smart and welcoming that i'm just so pleased to be working with her. here's one of the painting's she took:

i've been trying, mostly without any real success, to get the little girls back in to my work for awhile now. but this past month, it's finally started happening for me and i am glad to see them again. i missed them... and maybe i'll continue to let them keep their heads this time around. :) no promises though.
and even though i DID bring the camera to the reception last night, i left it in my bag. i guess i'd just rather be part of the event than let a camera mediate my experience of the event. i like being in the mix, mingling with new people and having conversations. i was just having too wonderful of a time chatting with the other artists in the show to break away and shove a camera in their faces. i don't know, sometimes it seems taking pictures just ends up being the proof that you weren't really taking part. not that i don't love photography, i do! but i guess this is probably why i'm not a photographer.

good news and more good news!
YAY! GOOD NEWS! my mom decided to take a spur of the moment trip up to visit me. she'll be here tuesday and i can't wait. we've already set up plans to make some work for The Paper Doll Project and i am so excited about that! it's been great to see how differently people approach making them and i love what she's come up with in the past.
aside from cutting paper dolls, we'll mostly likely spend the entire time she's here drinking tons of coffee and talking about everything under the sun. my step dad teases us that there are enough words in the english language to warrant such marathon conversations. :) it's nice and i'm glad she's coming up. i'll most likely not get any painting done while she's here but i'm more than ok with that. it's good to have family around.
AND MORE GOOD NEWS! i'll be in a show next month at HANG entitled "The Fairest of Them All: Women Artists Considering Social Justice in the Everyday"
Nov 1- November 21, 2008
here's the press release:
"At the beginning of the day she doesn't say in some romantic heroine yell "today I will fight all the injustices of the world!", but as the coffee settles and the many tasks of the day are brought into motion there are moments when indeed she'll look and say "hey that just isn't fair!" and someone needs to say so.
Artist, KC Rosenberg and Hang Art Director DJ Harmon join curatorial forces in an exhibition entitled Who's The Fairest of Them All on view at Hang Art Annex in San Francisco. Featured in this group show are women artists who consider social justice in the everyday. In the real world there are no magic mirrors to help illuminate what cannot be seen. Instead, women trial lawyers, women artists and women activists help give a voice to those who have remained silent and assist those who have been powerless. This exhibition sheds light upon that which has remained in darkness and was spurred on by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (SFTLA) and funded by the SFTLA Women's Caucus."
there will be two receptions for this show. the first is of course the big first thursday art ruckus in san francisco and the second is wednesday november 12th, put on by the SFTLA. i'd love to see everyone at both but if you can only make it to one, that'd be wonderful! i'll be dropping off the work to the gallery this week and i'll definitely give a preview of what you can expect to see a bit closer to the opening. for now i just wanted to share my good news and extend an early invite. :)
