these texts are an archive of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area from march 2007 - march 2015. it stands as a record of close to a decade of my life, charting the struggles i faced as an artist, daughter, and lover. messy and chaotic at times, eloquent and poetic at others, these texts are an index i am proud of. it was here in this electric box that i learned how to be honest about my experiences and the person i needed to become. it was here that i first learned the truism that words make the world and how to trust such a beautiful, rife, hard fact.

thank you for meeting me here in such tall grass.

monday, and i am glad for the solace a busy week provides. it is hard to get too stressed out by looking too far down the road when you've got a lot to do. Und ich habe viel zu tun. still, i'd love to be able to stay home and paint today. i spent my entire sunday with the work. i got lost in a big graphite piece and a big oil painting for most of the day and spend a few hours reading anais nin's diary (volume 2). i drank tea and practiced my german and then went back to the canvas. on may 16th, we install "May Fairs" at Project One in San Francisco. me, megan woolfe (YAY!!!! hi megan!), charmaine olivia, and chelsea brown have teamed up to bring you one brilliant and beautiful collection of work, that's for sure. the show opens wednesday, may 18th, and i definitely want to see you. do come by and give me hugs. i get to install my Worry Roses (for my mother, for myself) again and I am OVERJOYED that so many people like the peice. i am absolutely honored to get a new wall to show it on. the more air-time this piece gets, the better. huh, mama? :)

and then june 2nd... another group show in huntington beach. GO! GO! GO! and i'm praying that, between these two shows, much of the work will find their new and perfect homes. there's a wide, dark threshold i need to cross inside The Work and i want to make sure as many of my babies are in safe hands and working their magic out in the world as possible before i cross it. but i guess that's not really something i can do much about. all i can do is put the work up on a wall. all i can do is trust it. all i can do is keep going, keep pushing, and keep sliding the graphite across the page.

for as much fun as i'm having being back in school and learning new things and having a more concrete daily schedule, i'm really looking forward to summer when i can spend entire days reading and writing again, drawing and crocheting, no homework to worry over, just the freedom of Practice. 3 weeks to go. but honestly, it is a pleasure to have this much art to care for and think about and worry over. a pleasure and an honor. absolutely.

and now- back to back school and work.

have a wonderful day!

red roses, information

tonight is the opening of Literati at Slingshot. it is our last show in the beautiful venue at 890 Valencia. yep. our time there is coming to a close but i can't tell you how lucky we are to have had it for the passed 3 months. if you've been inside the space, you know how lucky we are. it is that gorgeous. but if you've never been and you're in the area, i highly encourage you to come out tonight. music, wine, art, ME. hahahaha! if you need more reason than that, show up and i'll give you a few more. ;)

also, we decided to leave my installation Worry Roses (for my mother, for myself) up. freya said she wanted it to have more time, every moment possible, to be seen and considered. especially in such a beautiful space. as a result, i decided to be brave and go ahead and "show" the new piece for my mom. the red roses. i say "show" because it isn't completely finished yet. i will be constructing the piece on site. you will be able to watch this bed, this garden, this head stone, be built and shaped. it's important to me to get this piece made quickly. there is something deep down that calls for its existence. i must make it. i must make it for her. and it's a risk to put such a personal narrative in public, especially one that is so current, one that is still being lived through, but i feel it necessary to open the door to that discussions. i know i am not unique in this. this story is happening in other people's lives too. we need a place to be. so few places feel right. i will build this site for all who need it.

Whether taking the shape of a poem, fairy tale, diary entry, grocery list, or miscellaneous receipt, text fuels the tempo of life and identity. It establishes the contour and texture of a day. Language, in its many forms and functions, creates and re-creates reality. It is through words that the world is made.

Whether building poems from spatters of coffee, building zoos of dark fantasy from children's tales, or finding a reflection of one's identity in the life story of a writer, the artwork in Literati offers a map of how text expands our loves, fears, ideas, desires, and philosophies. The artists in this exhibition, great lovers of books and language, pay personal homage to the power of the written word.

Launa Bacon’s work is middlebrow, low-def and “creepy.” Her work is often an examination of the narratives that shape female identity.

Lea Feinstein’s performance and installation work incorporates narratives drawn from nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and other “domestic” sources. She also creates mixed media art books which include her personal narratives.

Freya Prowe’s work is lyrical, dark and draws upon the tradition of European fairy tales of her childhood. Prowe creates images that playfully prey upon the duality inherent in human interactions.

Angela Simione uses the methods of erasure to create her own "redacted" documents, making metaphors for the experiences of loss. Simione presents fragments, tiny bits of evidence, allusions to a lost history.

awesome!

so many people came through Slingshot yesterday! it was amazing! and here i was, all set to spend the day quietly crocheting, greeting the few people who might come in to look around, drink tea from the coffee shop next door, and just kick back in such a beautiful space for the day. nope! my retail you-had-better-greet-every-single-person-who-walks-in-that-door experience kicked in and i did not get much crocheting done at all! there was a constant flow of people all day long. so many people from the neighborhood came in to wish us well on our venture and express their hope that we'll get to stay in this space for a long, long, LONG time. i can't tell you how many people told me that it was wonderful to see a gallery pop up that shows this kind of art. awesome!!! :D i can't even tell you how good that makes me feel.

we are already busy planning the december show. it is the last month we are guaranteed to have the space so we want to do the best job we possible can. it's such a wonderful opportunity and just so rewarding. the beautiful artist Meagan Donegan is at the gallery today. i love her drawings of sheep. LOVE! if you're in the are, pop on in and say hello!

sunday afternoon (2-6pm) is the reception for 'tiny' at Studio Gallery which i am very much looking forward to. i love just being in jen abd rab's space. it just plain ol' feels good to be there.

i tell ya... the last few weeks it has felt so amazingly wonderful to be a working artist. :) i am so so so thankful.

whooo...

i am beat! i mean BEAT! i slept and slept and slept and didn't manage to drag my silly self out of bed today until 9 o'clock. yikes! that's like... 4 hours behind schedule! oops. looks like The Jog will have to wait until this afternoon. by the time i'm done drinking coffee it'll be much too hot for the little girl to spend a solid hour running and hiking around in the blaze of the sun. i do not want to stroke out my little dog. so in the mean time, painting will be the order of the day. my usual. :)

yesterday, i spent the day in the city and it was absolutely wonderful. WONDERFUL! i met the lovely mina dresden (highlight of my day, week, month!) and the show she's got up right now, Jet Lag, is stunning. if you like work with a solid conceptual core, you'll love this show. the work is just beautiful!

after that, i dropped Lineage 2 off at the gallery and joked around with all my buddies over there. it's always such a great time at HANG. it really is. everybody who works there is super cool and not bourgie in the least and loves to talk as much as i do... well, almost as much as i do. i wake up talking, so... i'm a bit hard to beat when it comes to that sort of thing. :)

and then after that, i went over to the Studio Gallery to pick up some old work of mine and talk with jen and rab. they are such sweethearts. so positive and happy and light-hearted. it's always fun stopping in to talk with them for a bit and see all the new work on the walls.

i had an awesome day. awesome. and by 9 o'clock last night i was completely wiped out and heading to bed. i slept a solid 12 hours. dang! super dang! guess i needed the rest, huh! ha!

anyway, my maids need some attention. it's sunny and bright and a good day for working outside. i like working outside in the beautiful natural light and people stopping by to check out what i'm doing and my dog sniffing around and a glass of wine from the neighbor during break time.

a bit of this, a bit of that...

so for about that last 4 months or so i've been asked, with ever-increasing regularity, if i've got a Facebook account. apparently, MySpace has fallen somewhat out of favor for the adult crowd and Facebook is the preferred way to stay connected to all your college buddies. so, yesterday evening i set up an account and am already completely obsessed by it- my new shiny toy to break. just the way it goes for me. i've already checked it today and am now holding it up as a golden carrot to bribe myself in to getting some work done. aside from the many canvasses in my studio, there's also a sink full of dirty dishes that need to be done and a pile of laundry in the bathroom. we'll see.

later today i'm going to my first ever wine-tasting. i'm so excited! and i don't really even like wine all that much. i've recently acquired a taste for the whites (chardonnay is at the top of my tastiness list) but still no luck with reds. they taste like rancid butter to me. or dirt. plain ol' dirt in a fancy glass. but i hope to get overcome this and develop some adult taste-buds in the near future. again, we'll see.

but for all of you in the san francisco bay area region of the world, tonight is the opening reception for marci washington's solo show at Rena Bransten, Dark Mirror.

i won't be able to make it out to see it until the weekend but if you've got nothing planned, i highly recommend it. marci is not only a super great painter but a huge sweetheart and the gallery she shows with is one of my all-time favorites. the evening will not disappoint.

Here you go, Alanna...

i had such a wonderful time yesterday! eddie and i spent the majority of our time laughing like crazy and talking trash (as usual) and made some art of our own at his studio before taking off to go to the 1st Thursday Receptions.

The jewel of the evening was undoubtedly Jamie Vasta's new work at Patricia Sweetow Gallery. amazing! stunning! i've been following her work since i first found out about her last year. she instantly made the top 5 in my list of all-time favorite artists and her new show not only held her spot, it reinforced it, underlined it, highlighted it, shoot... carved it in stone! her work is not only breath-takingly beautiful, but so damn smart that when i'm in the same room as her work i really do feel like i am in the presence of greatness. do i sound like a groupie yet? ha! which is funny seeing as how last night i actually got to meet Jamie (turns out we've got a mutual friend), and the first thing that comes tumbling out of my mouth is... "so i'm such a big, horrible groupie when it comes to your art!" AHHHHHHHHHH! WHAT A NERD! SHIT!!!! i am totally kicking myself today for not maintaining my cool around her or at least being a little more smooth than THAT! geez. hopefully, she took it as the compliment it was intended to be and i'll remind myself to never, ever, under ANY circumstance, EVER refer to myself as a groupie to ANYONE, EVER! i swear, i get geekier by the minute. haha!

a lot of the other galleries seemed to have the same stuff up that they did a month ago so there's not much else to talk about in terms of this particular reception night. besides, who really cares when we can talk about Jamie Vasta some more instead? :) ha!

anyway, all this to say that we had a wonderful night. we even ran in to some friendly CCA faces that i haven't seen since graduation. we had the whole High Distinction Club there for a minute (minus, of course Mrs. Alanna! BOO!). we drank too much wine, or at least i did, and we talked with almost everyone we happened to be in the same room with. a very cool night, very cool indeed. i hope everyone else who made it had as great a time as i did and if you haven't made it out yet, GO! it is definitely worth it, i promise!

bookish and hopeful...

heather left a few hours ago. she came up for a quick little holiday. we had our coffee fueled slumber party and talked about poetry. i read her one of the poems i've been working on for the last few weeks and i was so happy she liked it. she also helped me identify that i'm getting really ahead of myself by even wondering what "the public" would think of them. i shouldn't be thinking about that end of things at all, at least not at the stage i'm at.

all i need to be concerned with at this point is doing the work itself, learning this craft, and trying my hardest to give the poems the patience and time they require. so that's what i'm gonna do. i'm so interested in poetry and in utilizing it somehow in my larger art practice that i really do need to just calm down and do the work. it's such a wonderful art form and i'd love to be good at it. sometimes, my impatience runs away with me because i want to be good at it RIGHT NOW; but then i remember the long years i spent making paintings i could hardly stand to look at and i realize that it's gonna take time and it's gonna take a diligent, focused, concern on my part to get the work to a place that i can feel proud of. i only started making paintings that i actually liked about 3 years ago. until that point, i honestly couldn't stand my own work. but you guys have already heard that story. anyway, the point is i need to relax and just enjoy the learning process and, to an extent, be a romantic about it: write for myself alone. and i like that idea.

heather helped a lot and i so enjoy our visits together. she's the only friend i've got that has a larger than average appreciation for poetry and it's wonderful to have someone to talk with about poetry-related concerns. plus, she writes too and our visits have a definite workshop component that is so helpful to both of us. it's good to have this with another person.

we also went on a drive to explore the city and found a new used bookstore. i spend way more money than i intended to but i got some great stuff. the book i'm most excited about diving in to is Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop. i've been in the mood for something more macabre these days and haven't been able to find a book that satisfies that desire. heather said this book should do the trick and smiled wide: a very good sign. :)

she also spent more money than she wanted to but at least it went to books. it's always been pretty hard for me to feel bad about spending money on them (sorry sweetie). i've long since outgrown my two huge bookcases and don't have the space right now for a third. i have small piles of books cropping up around my bed and in my studio but i can't say that i really mind. just being around books make me one happy girl. i was born with a hopelessly romantic fascination with books and words and records and writing. i can't help it. i love all things literary. not the worst attraction one could have, right?

and in art news, tomorrow is 'reception night' in San Francisco. i will definitely be making the rounds, looking at all the new work and drinking wine. my buddy eddie is my date so i'm sure once we get to our second glass, we'll be fluent in art speak and snobbing it up for all the eavesdroppers. i'll apologize now for all the jargon you may in fact be subjected too if you stumble across us. ha! but i hope everyone will be making the rounds tomorrow night as well. it's just such an important and thoughtful thing to do to show some support for your local art community... and we artists really appreciate it too.

always hopping on board at the last minute... but it seems to be working for me

yesterday was quite a day! absolutely wonderful, actually! i swung by SF Studio Gallery in San Francisco prior to going to the reception at HANG and managed to get two paintings in to the TINY exhibition they've got going on there. The show itself features an enormous amount of artwork - everything from paintings, to prints, to jewelry- all of which is under 7" x 7"... hence the name TINY.

Walking in to the gallery yesterday, it was such a treat to see the walls completely covered (salon style)in art. and Jennifer, the owner, is so sweet and smart and welcoming that i'm just so pleased to be working with her. here's one of the painting's she took:

i've been trying, mostly without any real success, to get the little girls back in to my work for awhile now. but this past month, it's finally started happening for me and i am glad to see them again. i missed them... and maybe i'll continue to let them keep their heads this time around. :) no promises though.

and even though i DID bring the camera to the reception last night, i left it in my bag. i guess i'd just rather be part of the event than let a camera mediate my experience of the event. i like being in the mix, mingling with new people and having conversations. i was just having too wonderful of a time chatting with the other artists in the show to break away and shove a camera in their faces. i don't know, sometimes it seems taking pictures just ends up being the proof that you weren't really taking part. not that i don't love photography, i do! but i guess this is probably why i'm not a photographer.

good news and more good news!

YAY! GOOD NEWS! my mom decided to take a spur of the moment trip up to visit me. she'll be here tuesday and i can't wait. we've already set up plans to make some work for The Paper Doll Project and i am so excited about that! it's been great to see how differently people approach making them and i love what she's come up with in the past.

aside from cutting paper dolls, we'll mostly likely spend the entire time she's here drinking tons of coffee and talking about everything under the sun. my step dad teases us that there are enough words in the english language to warrant such marathon conversations. :) it's nice and i'm glad she's coming up. i'll most likely not get any painting done while she's here but i'm more than ok with that. it's good to have family around.

AND MORE GOOD NEWS! i'll be in a show next month at HANG entitled "The Fairest of Them All: Women Artists Considering Social Justice in the Everyday"
Nov 1- November 21, 2008

here's the press release:

"At the beginning of the day she doesn't say in some romantic heroine yell "today I will fight all the injustices of the world!", but as the coffee settles and the many tasks of the day are brought into motion there are moments when indeed she'll look and say "hey that just isn't fair!" and someone needs to say so.

Artist, KC Rosenberg and Hang Art Director DJ Harmon join curatorial forces in an exhibition entitled Who's The Fairest of Them All on view at Hang Art Annex in San Francisco. Featured in this group show are women artists who consider social justice in the everyday. In the real world there are no magic mirrors to help illuminate what cannot be seen. Instead, women trial lawyers, women artists and women activists help give a voice to those who have remained silent and assist those who have been powerless. This exhibition sheds light upon that which has remained in darkness and was spurred on by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (SFTLA) and funded by the SFTLA Women's Caucus."

there will be two receptions for this show. the first is of course the big first thursday art ruckus in san francisco and the second is wednesday november 12th, put on by the SFTLA. i'd love to see everyone at both but if you can only make it to one, that'd be wonderful! i'll be dropping off the work to the gallery this week and i'll definitely give a preview of what you can expect to see a bit closer to the opening. for now i just wanted to share my good news and extend an early invite. :)
