as i go through the portfolios and photograph all the work, a certain dream of mine starts to tug tug tug at my brain. for the passed several months i've been playing with the idea of putting together a book of drawings and i'm thinking the self-publishing route is the best route to take. check out amy king's essay on the subject here. so...
where to start??? and what has your experience been? enjoyable? futile? worthwhile? easy? can a novice do it? and what about templates? any and all experience/advice/critique is totally welcome. in fact, it is BEGGED FOR!
and in the meantime, here's a nice little pair of drawings. :) one thing that keeps happening during this documenting process is i keep finding things that are really great as diptychs and triptychs! it's so exciting!
these texts are an archive of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area from march 2007 - march 2015. it stands as a record of close to a decade of my life, charting the struggles i faced as an artist, daughter, and lover. messy and chaotic at times, eloquent and poetic at others, these texts are an index i am proud of. it was here in this electric box that i learned how to be honest about my experiences and the person i needed to become. it was here that i first learned the truism that words make the world and how to trust such a beautiful, rife, hard fact.

i think you should totally go for it. i think DIY self-publishing has been the route of a number of underground graphic & comic artists, it could be for you too. how would you want to reproduce your drawings? as actual prints, or scan them in digitally & print at a kinko's? desktop publishing apps are pretty easy to learn nowadays, tho some can be pricey.
love your diptyches. something about your drawings of repeated headless figures with repeated clothing items reminds me of "Fantastic Planet," a strange & compelling animated film from france made in 1973. a mythology of humanity being redrawn that you seem to share here.
oh, re: your post below, marjane satrapi & phoebe gloeckner just kill me as graphic artists/storytellers. they simply just KILL me, they're so good.
Let me know if you do, I will want a copy. Definately.
roz, thank you. diptychs are my new favorite play-thing. ha! mix and match, mix and match. i also like the fact they are historically referred to as a "device".
i haven't seen this movie! but i will! i love my blog-o-sphere education- i have lists scribbled down of all the books and movies that get recommended or written about.
i read volume 1 of Persepolis last night. WHOOO WEEEE!!!! dang. double dang! so so so wonderful. i'll read volume 2 tonight before bed. and Pheobe Glockner is just stunning. i'm definitely going to have to read A Child's Life again after Persepolis and Embroideries. SO GOOD!
i looked around at programs yesterday and noticed, depending on what one wants to do, it can get pretty expensive pretty quick. i've got a lot of research to do but i'd love to get this rolling one day. maybe i'll make some zines instead for now? zines are RAD. ;)
marta! i surely will! thank you! :D
I am certainly not an expert, but if you need an extra pair of editor's eyes, let me know--I would be so happy to help.
And yes, I'll buy lots of copies.
thank you, hannah. i may have to take you up on that! :) because i have no clue about these things at all. how long it should be, if there should be a more specific theme other than "drawing", etc. hmmmmmmmm. lots to think about. but FUN to think about, nevertheless.
yesyesyes DO IT :D!
hahahaha! yay! thanks ana! maybe i'll start off the book adventure by making some zines. i've got a whole roll of quarters that could take that kind of project pretty far. :)
hahaha yeah that's a good idea!
zines aren't THAT expensive :D
