So.... it's funny!
This piece is as much about feminine
equality as it is craft and art, namely the masculinity (and supremacy) of painting.
I was laying in bed one night, trying to come up with sentences that i could use for my banner project (a' la Jenny Holzer) when this saying came to mind. I had heard it earlier in the day in a rap song. At the time, i remember feeling a bit offended by the lyrics, but also wondering where i had heard this sentiment uttered before? Magnolia! Tom Cruise! Misogyny's greatest portrayal on film... almost.
At any rate, it was perfect and i got out of bed and got to work. The saying, however, wasn't exactly right for a banner. In that form, it would be a little too didactic so i decided to cross stitch the saying and hang it up in my kitchen.
Once the piece was framed in a traditional moulding, it felt complete. I wanted to express the pervasive nature of this sentiment as being inherent to looking at art, as well as in the home.
A painting has always been taken far more seriously than a quilt or needlework. Here, i wanted to show the dominance of the masculine arts by using craft to subjugate itself and admit inferiority. It is meant to be blunt, but also humorous.
